How to Make These Easy and Delicious Vegan Chickpea Burgers

chickpea burgers
Each week, I try to replace at least a couple of meals with a plant-based or vegetarian alternative. Last week, I made this vegan chili, which was so delicious. I decided I’d try another healthy recipe, so I decided on chickpea burgers using my favorite legume – chickpeas/garbanzo beans. This recipe is for vegan chickpea burgers, but I also share ways to change it up if you don’t like chickpeas.

Why I Used Chickpeas

One of the reasons I love chickpea burgers is because they have a crunchier/chewier texture than other beans. Black beans would be my second choice for beans to use in this veggie burger recipe. If you prefer black beans, I do think they’d be an easy substitute for this recipe. The other benefit of black beans is they are easier to mash than chickpeas.

One struggle I did have with this recipe was getting the mixture to stick together well. I think a creamier bean might actually help bind the burgers a bit better. Next time, I think I’ll try using black beans or northern beans, since both would mash and blend so well.

How to Make Homemade Veggie Burgers

There are so many different ways to make homemade veggie burgers. Many of them have some sort of grain and/or legume. Most add some veggies. Some have cheese and/or eggs. There are so many different recipes, and all of them are so different.

This specific recipe calls for several grains, tofu, and beans. I love this recipe because of the additional protein in the tofu and the beans. However, if you don’t like some of the ingredients in here, I’d suggest searching for other veggie burger recipes. Now that I know how easy it is to make veggie burgers at home, I’m definitely going to try it again.

These homemade chickpea burgers are super easy to make, really tasty, and can be adapted to your favorite flavors. This recipe gets most of it’s flavor from the Korean BBQ sauce. You can also add different fresh or dried herbs to change up the flavor.

Easy Homemade Chickpea Burgers Recipe

Ingredients:

1 (15.5 ounce) can garbanzo beans, drained and mashed
¼ cup oat bran
¼ cup quick oats
1 cup cooked white or brown rice
1 (14 ounce) package firm tofu
5 tablespoons Korean barbecue sauce
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon ground black pepper
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
Vegetable oil, for frying

Directions:

In a large bowl, mix together the mashed garbanzo beans, oat bran, quick oats, and rice.

In a separate bowl, mash the tofu with your hands. Drain off as much the water as you can. Stir the tofu into the garbanzo beans and oats. Add the bbq sauce, salt, pepper, garlic and onion powder and mix until well combined.

Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Form patties out of the bean mixture, and fry them in hot oil for about 5 minutes per side.

You can serve your chickpea patty recipe just as you would your favorite hamburger. If you aren’t vegan, you can add cheese and fresh veggies on a bun of your choice. I also love serving veggie burgers inside of a tortilla, like a wrap. Sometimes, I also serve them over a salad.
