The history of Peeps dates back to the 1920s when the Rodda Candy Company, located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, began making marshmallow candies in the shape of chickens. In the 1950s, the company began to automate the production of Peeps, which allowed them to produce larger quantities and expand their distribution throughout the country. At this time, Peeps became available in different colors, and the shape of the candy was changed to a more generic shape, such as bunnies and chicks. In 1953, Just Born, Inc. acquired the Rodda Candy Company and began producing Peeps at their facility in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Just Born, Inc. continued to expand the Peeps product line, introducing new flavors and shapes, such as ghosts for Halloween and Christmas trees for the winter season. Peeps are popular cultural icons, appearing in movies, television shows, and other forms of media. In recent years, the brand has expanded beyond just candy to include merchandise such as clothing, accessories, and home decor. How to Make Chocolate Eggs at Home For my Peep cupcakes, I decided to make half-eggshells to place my Peeps in. I think it's so cute and fun way to change up your cupcake topper rather than just a Peep by itself. To make chocolate eggs at home using melting wafers, start by gathering the materials you will need. You will need melting wafers, egg-shaped molds, and a microwave-safe bowl. Next, melt the melting wafers according to the package instructions in the microwave-safe bowl, stirring until the mixture is smooth and free of lumps. Once the chocolate has melted, pour it into the egg-shaped molds, filling them about halfway. Then, use a spoon or brush to spread the melted chocolate evenly around the mold, making sure it coats the sides and bottom. Tap the molds gently on the counter to release any air bubbles, and then place the molds in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes, or until the chocolate has hardened. Once the chocolate has hardened, remove the molds from the refrigerator and carefully pop the chocolate eggs out of the molds. Fill the chocolate eggs with your Peeps, or other candies. If you do want a sealed round egg, you can melt more chocolate wafers and use them to seal the two halves of the chocolate egg together. I chose to keep them as half-shells because they almost looked like they had been cracked. I also didn't worry if the molds were filled completely because I liked that the eggshells had a rough look on the edges. I chose to use both white and robin blue colored melting wafers for my eggs.
