For my true chocolate lovers, I have the perfect flourless chocolate torte recipe is for you. This recipe is definitely for those people who love rich and extra dark chocolate. If you don’t love chocolate, this is going to be too rich for you. For some people, this recipe might not be sweet enough.
What is a Torte vs. Cake?
Have you ever wondered what the difference between a torte and a cake is? It’s complicated. And then you throw in a torte vs. a tart and I’m even more confused. The answer in English is not so straightforward. A torte can be a cake or a tart, depending on what you make it with and where the recipe originated.
Traditional tortes come from Central and Eastern Europe – especially in Germany, Austria, and Hungary. In those countries, the word simply means cake. Tortes are baked treats that you would typically find in coffeehouses and they would be paired with strong coffee. Tortes are often very rich and dense since they often don’t use traditional flour. Many use ground nuts or bread crumbs in place of flour. My chocolate torte doesn’t even have any flour! Many tortes have layers of jam, frosting or another filling, some are fancy with many layers, and others are easy to put together, like my recipe. No matter if you call it a cake or a tart or a torte, we can all agree it taste delicious.
Dark Chocolate Lovers Rejoice
As I mentioned, this cake is very rich. You need to be a true chocolate lover for this one. My daughter and I loved it because we are both completely content to eat pieces of the darkest chocolate (she’s only 7 but she loves it!). Yet, my son and a few other people who tried it thought it was way too bitter and way too rich. That’s the thing about dark chocolate, it definitely is an acquired taste. If you don’t love dark chocolate but still want to try this recipe, you could opt to use milk chocolate chips instead of dark chocolate chips. That might work out ok! I can’t say for sure since I haven’t tried it, but it would be worth a shot.
Either way, this recipe is quite simple to make and the final product looked very elevated, especially with the dusting of powdered sugar. This chocolate torte cake will serve a lot of people because a thin slice is plenty for each guest – it’s that rich. If you’re looking for a simple, yet rich desert, this one is for you. Flourless Chocolate Torte Recipe
1 Bag of Dark chocolate (I used 60% cacao)
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1/2 cup sugar
4 whole eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup cocoa powder
1/3 cup dark rum
Preheat your oven to 350 F. Grease and flour a 7 inch round tin. Grease the entire pan with butter and line the bottom with parchment. Chop the chocolate and butter into small pieces. In the microwave or on stovetop , melt together until smooth. Whisk in the sugar and then whisk in the eggs, one by one. Next, whisk in the vanilla extract and rum. Finish by whisking in the cocoa until smooth.
Pour the batter into the pan and bake for 28- 30 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs. Cool in pan for 10 minutes, unmould and cool completely on a wire rack.
Serve Flourless Chocolate Rum Cake with or without powdered sugar. I would also suggest serving with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream to cut the richness of this cake.
