5 Reasons I Chose This Grey Velvet Couch for My New Living Room

By Stacey Freeman 1 Comment

This post is sponsored by Apt. 98 and Manhattan Comfort. All opinions are my own.

Choosing a sofa for your home is not an easy task. There are so many options that it can feel very overwhelming. I spent a lot of time online purusing different furniture websites, scrolling through my instagram feed looking at furniture pages, and then I found the Granville velvet couch, and immediately fell in love.

There are a lot of things to consider when selecting a couch. I came up with at least 5 major reasons this was the right couch for our home.

5 Things to Consider When Choosing a Couch

1. Color

In the past, we had brown and beige couches. Although the color selections were pretty boring, they did hold up well with having kids. I chose this dark grey velvet couch because the color is so versatile and would work really well with the decor options I selected for my home. The grey acts as a neutral, but also blended well with the wood floors and red brick fire place in my home. It’s also dark enough that it won’t show wear and tear, dirt, or stains very easily, which is always a bonus with kids.

2. Material

In the past, I owned a tweed couch. it held up well, but it wasn’t very warm and inviting to sit in. The idea of a grey velvet couch felt more family-friendly and comfortable. Funny enough, the day the couch arrived, my son couldn’t stop rubbing his face on the couch and rubbing his hands up and down the side of the couch. He loved the material. It was, indeed, cozy and comfortable.

3. Size

I wanted a couch that could comfortably fit three adults. Not that I would usually have three adults on a couch, but you know, it’s nice to have a roomy couch. The thing I love about this grey velvet couch is how deep it is. I love to be able to sit with my legs pretzel-style on my couch. Nearly every night, I sit in the middle with my legs crossed with each kid resting their head on each of my legs. It’s one of the highlights of my night. I love that I can sit in the middle and each child can lay on each end of the couch – it’s that roomy.

4. Quality

Immediately when the couch arrived, I knew the quality was great. The material, the weight, the stitching, the legs. All of it is the highest quality. I know that we’ll have this couch for years to come. I also love that the pillows are firm, but could be refilled. The three back pillows are moveable and have zippers, so if at any point they get flat, we can alway re-stuff them.

5. Design

The overall feel of the couch is modern and clean. Having young kids, I think a lot of people opt for the big fluffy couches that don’t really have any design elements. I don’t think you have to do that. I think you can find a couch, like this one, that’s chic and also practical. Why sacrifice style, when you can find a couch that delivers style and comfort?

The only thing I would consider next time is whether a tufted couch is the right fit for us. Although I love the button details, my kids have been a little too curious about the buttons. I’ve had to scold them a few times and remind them not to play with the buttons. This is definitely not something I considered. Luckily, my kids are old enough to understand and listen to my requests, so I’m not too worried. However, if you have young kids, you might want to avoid tufted buttons, specifically. Overall, I’m very happy I chose this grey velvet couch. So far, it is a great fit for our family.

Please don’t touch my kids’ hair. Please tell Please don’t touch my kids’ hair. Please tell your kids not to touch their hair. I can’t believe I have to say this or explain why this is racist. But I do.

I’m sure this seems like a random statement to most people. It might not seem like a big deal to you. But it’s not random and it is a big deal. It’s a common experience for Black people, and it’s not ok.

Given everything going on right now, it’s hard for me to talk about a right to our personal space and bodies. That’s part of it. But it’s also about making my kids feel like an other.

New on poshinprogress.com, I’m sharing the story of my shock and surprise when my daughter told me she didn’t feel comfortable wearing her hair down anymore because so many of her classmates were touching her hair. And then being dumbfounded to find out my son has had a similar experience. I also share information on racial micro aggressions and history of Black people’s hair. If this story is surprising or confusing to you, please read more about why it’s never ok to touch Black people’s hair.

I was going to post about summer fashion. I was go I was going to post about summer fashion. I was going to talk about my kids’ beach camp next week.

But this can’t go unsaid. I am so angry right now. I am terrified for my daughter and women in the U.S.

We just lost a fundamental human right. We just lost control of our bodies.

This is not about saving the lives of unborn children. Because if it was, then all guns would be banned - because guns are the leading cause of childhood death in the U.S.

This decision is about control. About controlling women.

If you have the ability to choose whether to own a gun, why can’t I choose the healthcare decisions that are right for me? This is no longer a democracy. This decision has so much greater impact than people even realize.

If you’re looking for resources, I’m linking a comprehensive one in my stories. This is not a place for debate, this is a place to protect women and our rights to control our bodies. We must stand together.
