Pasta making classes typically last a few hours and are led by experienced chefs or culinary instructors. During the class, you’ll learn how to make pasta dough from scratch, how to roll and shape the dough, and how to cook the pasta.
You’ll also learn about different types of pasta and sauces, as well as techniques for making stuffed pasta like ravioli or tortellini.
Eataly Pasta Making Class in Los Angeles
We attended the Eataly pasta-making class because I was invited to a press event with the release of the upcoming Book Club movie, which will be in theaters on May 12th. This was my first time attending a pasta-making class. I’ve made gnocchi at home, but never tried any other pasta at home. I had no idea just how easy it is to make at home. I will definitely try it again, now that I feel confident in my skills.
The class was so much fun! When we arrived, they had several appetizers for us to choose from, such as Caprese salad, charcuterie with meats and cheeses, and a caprese pizza. They also offered us bottomless rose during the introduction and pasta-making portion of the class.
Once we were done making our pasta, which we got to take home, then the chef prepared us cacio e pepe. It was such a fun experience to see him make a homemade sauce right in front of us. They served us red wine while he was cooking for us. Then, he served each of us our own serving of the cacio e pepe he made. It was such a fun class, and I can’t wait to share my homemade pasta with my family.
Tips for Making Perfect Pasta at Home
Once you’ve taken a pasta making class in Los Angeles, it’s time to start making your own pasta at home! Here are some tips to help you get started:
Use High-Quality Ingredients: The key to great homemade pasta is using high-quality flour and eggs. Look for flour that is specifically labeled for pasta making, and use fresh eggs, if your recipe includes eggs. The semolina pasta we made at Eataly did not include eggs. We used only flour and water.
Equipment You’ll Need: While you can roll out pasta dough by hand, a pasta machine is great if you want to make noodles or really uniform pasta. If you don’t want to use a pasta machine, you can use the board like I did to make gnocchi and cavatelli. Here is a link to the board we used. For the technique we used, you’ll also need a dough cutter, like this one.
Don’t overwork the dough: When making pasta dough, be careful not to overwork it. Overworking the dough can make it tough and chewy.
Adding Water or Flour: If your dough is too sticky, add more flour. If your dough is too dry, add more water. You’ll know its ready when its all the same consistency and smoothness. It will be slightly sticky, but not very sticky.
Cook the pasta in plenty of salted water: When cooking pasta, be sure to use plenty of salted water. This will help to season the pasta and prevent it from sticking together.

Easy Semolina Pasta Recipe
If you’re looking for a simple and delicious homemade pasta recipe, using semolina and water is a great option. This recipe makes enough pasta for 4 servings.
- 2 cups semolina flour
- 1 cup water
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the semolina flour and water. Mix together until the dough comes together.
- Knead the dough for about 10-15 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough is too dry, add a little more water. If it’s too wet, add a little more flour.
- Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for about 30 minutes.
- After the dough has rested, divide it into 4 equal portions.
- Using a rolling pin or pasta machine, roll out each portion of dough to your desired thickness. If using a pasta machine, start at the widest setting and gradually decrease the thickness.
- Cut the pasta into your desired shape. If you don’t have a pasta machine, this is when you can use the board to make cavatelli, as I did.
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook for 2-3 minutes or until al dente. The pasta should float to the top when it’s ready.
- Drain the pasta and serve with your favorite sauce and toppings.
