How do you start your morning? Before work, the minute I’m done getting dressed, I need my coffee. I’m a major Starbucks® coffee fan and I like to drink Starbucks® Pike Place® Roast. Once I’ve got my coffee (to go in my reusable cup), I head to my job, at a university.
Over the years, I’ve talked a little bit about my job, but not in very much detail. Given that Earth month just passed, I thought it was about time I told you a little about what I do. In my current job, I help translate our university’s sustainability goals to the general public through museum partnerships. What does that actually mean? Well, I get to travel to museums across the world, meet a lot of interesting people, and teach museum professionals how they can educate other people about sustainability.

So what is sustainability? Well, it’s more than just recycling or taking care of our planet. It’s also about promoting social justice, making sure our environment is protected and resilient, and ensuring economic prosperity. Creating true sustainability is a major challenge, but I get to help people think about this important topic to help make our world better.Honestly, my job is so meaningful to me because it has literally changed my world view. I think a lot more about being a good steward of the planet and how to care for the people who live on it. I’ve gotten to travel to four continents in the last year and a half, meeting countless people from different and unique cultures. I’ve seen many sustainability challenges that are hard to envision from a U.S. context (my trip to South Africa was especially eye-opening). Being able to meet so many interesting people, experience so many new places and think about how we can ensure our planet is healthy for generations to come is very rewarding.

Before I started this job, I knew very little about sustainability. I cared about nature, but beyond recycling and using a reusable water bottle, I wasn’t very sustainable myself. There is always more that can be done, but I do pay a lot more attention to the products I buy and how I dispose of them. I also try to lessen my impact on the earth as much as I can.

That’s one reason I like to buy Starbucks® coffee; because their own vision for the planet aligns with mine.
