If you're looking for Memorial Day desserts, this red white and blue trifle recipe is a great place to start. The thing I love about this recipe is the fact that it uses fresh fruit, is so easy to make, and looks so cute and festive for the American summer holidays. Even if you're not looking for a festive spin on a berry trifle, this recipe is still great for summer. You can use any berries you like, and you can keep or remove the star candies on top. I personally think this is the perfect patriotic dessert because what says Memorial day more than red white and blue desserts. To make this specific mixed berries trifle, you can either make a homemade angel food cake, or you can get a store-bought one as I did. It's super easy to make angel food cake at home, but I wanted to take one step out of it to make the whole process even quicker. I love that the cream is homemade though because I think it tastes so much better made from scratch. I saw a few different red white and blue trifle recipes that used different ingredients for the cream. Some of them used pudding, for example. This berry trifle recipe almost tastes like cheesecake because the filling is made with cream cheese, heavy whipping cream, and sugar. If you're a cheesecake fan, you'll love the cream. If you don't like that tangy taste, you should probably opt for just using whipped cream or more of a pudding base. I personally love the tangy cream cheese flavor with the berries and the sweetness of the cake. It is the perfect combination of sweet and tart for my palette. My daughter loved them too, but my son wasn't as much a fan because he just doesn't like that tart yogurt or cream cheese flavor. He did, however, love the candy toppings. If you'd like to make these cute candy stars, it's actually super easy to do. All you need is some candy melts and a star mold (I linked the ones I used in the recipe below). Then, you simply melt some of the candy melts, add the melted candy to the molds, and let them harden in the refrigerator or freezer for a few minutes before unmolding them. It really only took me about 10 minutes to make them, including hardening time. I think the little stars on top, along with the ribbon around the jars, adds so much festive detail to these adorable little red white and blue trifles. Red White and Blue Trifle with Fresh Berries Ingredients: 1/3 cup sugar 1 premade angel food cake, cut into 1-inch cubes 16 oz cream cheese, at room temperature 2 cups heavy cream 1-pint blackberries 1-pint raspberries Directions: Beat the 2/3 cup sugar and the cream cheese with a mixer on medium speed until smooth and light. Add the cream and beat on medium-high speed until smooth and the consistency of whipped cream. Layer the cake, berries, and cream in the mason jars. You can arrange them however you like. I alternated between berries, cake, and then a layer of cream. I chose to keep my berry layers separate, but you could also mix the fruit for each of the layers. Make sure the final top layer is cream so you can decorate it with sprinkles and the candy star (optional). You can also top it with a berry or two if you like. How to Make Candy Stars To make the candy stars, simply melt candy melts and put them into a star mold (another option here).
