What to Pack for a Cruise: A Complete Guide for Every Destination
Packing for a cruise is a unique challenge. You’re preparing for days at sea, excursions in port, casual moments by the pool, and themed nights on board—all while fitting it into a suitcase that will slide neatly under your cabin bed. I recently sailed on an adults-only Virgin Voyages cruise to the Eastern Caribbean and came away with a fresh perspective on what to bring (and what I wish I’d packed). Whether you’re heading to the Caribbean, Alaska, or the Mediterranean, this guide covers what to pack for a cruise, how to prepare for theme nights, and tips tailored to different cruise destinations.
You’ll also find links to other helpful posts I’ve written, including my Virgin Voyages Mediterranean cruise review and a detailed Greece packing list which could also work well when considering what to pack for a cruise.

What to Pack for a Cruise: The Basics
No matter where your cruise is taking you, there are a few items that absolutely need to make it into your suitcase. First and foremost: travel documents. Make sure your passport is up to date, check if you need any visas for international ports, and keep your boarding pass and travel insurance info handy.
When it comes to clothing, focus on versatile and comfortable pieces. I always pack a few breezy outfits for daytime—think sundresses, tanks, and lightweight shirts—as well as a couple of swimsuits (you’ll want a dry one ready while the other is drying). A cover-up, sunhat, and sunglasses are a must for pool days or beach excursions, and a refillable water bottle is great for staying hydrated in the sun.
For evenings, cruise style typically falls somewhere between casual and cocktail. While Virgin Voyages doesn’t require formalwear, you’ll still want to bring a few elevated options—like a jumpsuit, a fun dress, or a cute set you feel confident in. I also recommend packing a light sweater or jacket, since evenings on the water can get breezy and indoor spaces are often well air-conditioned.
Some often-overlooked essentials? Reef-safe sunscreen, a lightweight day bag or tote for excursions, and a small power strip (non-surge-protected) for extra outlets in your cabin. I also bring my favorite toiletries, motion sickness remedies, and a mini first-aid kit—better safe than scrambling at sea.
Other non-negotiables include sunscreen (make it reef-safe), sunglasses, a wide-brim hat, a good book, and a lightweight day bag for port days. I always bring a few toiletries that I prefer over the ship’s options, like my favorite face wash and moisturizer. And don’t forget a small travel medicine kit with motion sickness remedies, Band-Aids, and any personal prescriptions.

Virgin Voyages-Specific Packing Tips
If you’re sailing with Virgin Voyages, be ready for a few surprises—especially when it comes to onboard entertainment. Virgin is known for its themed events, and the vibe is decidedly more stylish and youthful than many traditional cruise lines. On my Eastern Caribbean sailing, we had a PJ party on the first night, a red-hot Scarlet Night event where everyone wore red, and other immersive experiences that felt more like curated nightlife than typical cruise activities.
Before your trip, download the Virgin Voyages app. The app will list upcoming themed nights so you can plan accordingly. A few fun outfits—like red clothing for Scarlet Night or cute loungewear for the PJ party—go a long way in helping you feel part of the experience. Virgin doesn’t have a formal night, so leave the evening gown at home and opt for creative, expressive looks instead.
Fitness classes are included in your fare on Virgin, so if you like working out, bring activewear and sneakers. From sunrise yoga to bungee workouts, there’s plenty to do beyond lounging and dining.

What to Pack for a Caribbean Cruise
If your cruise is headed to the Caribbean, you’ll want to prioritize comfort and staying cool. Most days will be hot and humid, and you’ll probably be spending a lot of time in a swimsuit or beachwear. I brought several breezy dresses, lightweight cover-ups, and rompers that could transition from beach to lunch without much effort. You’ll also want to have a few dry swimsuits on rotation, especially if you plan to swim every day.
Sun protection is huge. I packed a floppy hat, oversized sunglasses, and SPF 50 sunscreen (plus aloe just in case). For excursions, I brought water shoes for rocky beaches and a rash guard for extra sun protection. Evenings on the ship were casual but fun, so I packed some stylish separates and a couple of dresses that could work for dinner or a themed night.
The key here is to think breathable, quick-drying, and versatile. I also recommend packing a dry bag if you plan on doing any snorkeling, kayaking, or island-hopping—super handy for keeping your phone and essentials safe.

What to Pack for an Alaskan Cruise
Cruising to Alaska is an entirely different vibe. Instead of swimsuits and sandals, think layers, waterproof gear, and cozy outerwear. I packed thermal base layers, fleece pullovers, and a lightweight down jacket that packed easily in my day bag. Rain is common in Alaska, so a waterproof jacket (with a hood!) and water-resistant shoes are essential.
I also brought warm accessories like gloves, a beanie, and a scarf to stay comfortable during early morning deck strolls or glacier viewing. Shore excursions often include walking, hiking, or even wildlife spotting, so I made sure to have comfortable, supportive shoes that could handle various terrain.
Evenings onboard are more relaxed on most Alaskan cruises, so I didn’t need anything super dressy—just jeans, boots, and some nice tops. It’s all about practical comfort, and layers will be your best friend. I also brought binoculars, which turned out to be a great decision for whale watching and scenic moments from the balcony.

What to Pack for a Mediterranean Cruise
The Mediterranean cruise is where fashion meets function. You’re exploring historic cities like Rome, Athens, and Barcelona. So, your wardrobe needs to work for museums, cobblestone streets, and seaside cafes. I leaned into flowy dresses, midi skirts, linen pants, and breezy tops. You’ll walk a lot, so pack comfortable shoes that still look cute. I went with white sneakers and a pair of low-heeled sandals.
I also brought a lightweight scarf that doubled as a wrap for cooler evenings. It came in handy when visiting churches or other sites with dress codes. A swimsuit and cover-up are a must since many ports have nearby beaches or swimming spots. Of course, sun protection was key. Sunglasses, SPF, and a stylish hat made it into my day bag every time I left the ship.
Evenings on a Mediterranean cruise feel a little more refined, so I dressed up slightly more than I did in the Caribbean. Think polished but comfortable—simple dresses, jumpsuits, or matching sets. What Not to Bring on a Cruise
Cruise ships have specific rules about what can and can’t be brought on board. Irons, steamers, and surge-protected power strips are typically not allowed. Leave the hair dryer at home—cabins almost always have one. You also don’t need to bring towels for the pool or beach; the cruise line will provide them. Avoid packing too many valuables, especially expensive jewelry you don’t plan to wear. And remember, storage is tight, so bring luggage that fits under the bed or in the closet.
Final Thoughts on What to Pack for a Cruise
Cruise vacations are one of the best ways to see multiple destinations without having to unpack and repack constantly. But they do require a little extra planning, especially when it comes to clothing and themed events. If you’re sailing with Virgin Voyages, lean into the fun. The expressive energy of the ship is contagious. Check the app ahead of time for events like Scarlet Night or the PJ party. A few thoughtful outfit choices can help you feel more immersed in the experience.
