Green Tea Shot Recipe: How to Make This Sweet and Sour Cocktail

Have you heard of a green tea shot? I hadn’t until very recently. Initially, I actually thought it was a healthy shot, like an infusion of green tea and other things you would drink for your health. Well, I was wrong. Sure, healthy green tea shots do exist, but these ones are liquor. Green tea cocktails are sometimes called the Jameson green tea shot. They are super easy to make and a really interesting mix of sweet and sour. They are also a pretty popular cocktail shot and perfect for St. Patrick’s day.

What’s in a Green Tea Shot

So what is in a green tea shot? Well, its a sweet and sour Jameson cocktail that takes on the color of green tea. The ingredients include combining Jameson whiskey, peach schnapps, sour mix, and a splash of lemon lime soda. I’ve also seen some recipes call for an addition of green tea liquor or matcha powder but the majority of these green tea shots do not have any green tea in them.

History of Jameson Whiskey

John Jameson founded Jameson Irish whiskey in 1780. The first distillery was in Dublin, Ireland. Jameson gained popularity due to its reputation and quality. By the 19th century, Jameson exported to many other parts of Europe, North America and Australia due to its increased popularity. It is now known as one of the best and more recognizable whiskey brands because of its smooth, balance flavors. Jameson is now owned by the French spirits company Pernod Richard. However, they still produce in their original Dublin Distillery.

How to Make a Green Tea Shot

Making this shot couldn’t be easier. There are only a few ingredients in this shot. They include:

  • Jameson Whiskey
  • Peach Schnapps
  • Sour Mix
  • Lemon-Lime Soda

Some people say that Jameson Company invented the  green tea shot. But I’ve also read that this drink was invited in U.S. bars in the late 90’s or early 2000’s as a new take on a fruity cocktail. Since it is often called the Jameson green tea shot, a lot of people use Jameson. But you can substitute in your favorite Japanese, Irish, or American whiskey. Depending on how you like your shots to taste, you can add more or less lemon-lime soda to dilute some of the intensity. The soda will add a bit of sweetness and carbonation for a rounder and more balanced drink. And unlike many shots that you take all at once, this shot is one that’s good for sipping.
