4 Great Tips on How to Style a Midi Skirt

I love midi dresses and midi skirts. I think they are the perfect length. They are the perfect balance of sexy and sophisticated. Since I wear them so often, I thought it was about time that I do a little tutorial on how to style a midi skirt.

What is a Midi Skirt?

A midi skirt, if you aren’t familiar, is much longer than knee length, but not full-length either. Midi skirts tend to hit just below the knee to around mid-calf. They can turn frumpy if not paired with the right top and shoes.

How to Style a Midi Skirt

I like the midi best with a body-conscious top and sky-high strappy heels, to balance the full coverage of the skirt. For this work look, I chose to wear a fitted blazer that definitely shows off my figure, but it also has a lit of a peplum to it, so the lower half of the jacket floats away from my mid-section.

1. Casual

You can absolutely wear a midi skirt in a casual way. It looks super adorable with white sneakers and a t-shirt or tank top. My favorite is to wear classic white Stan Smith’s or white Chuck Taylors for your sneakers.  As for the t-shirt, just make sure you either tie it in a little knot, it’s a cropped length, or you tuck it in. Because of the shape of a midi skirt, it’s important to create that waist definition with one of the styling options I mentioned above.

2. Dressy

If you’re wondering how to style a midi skirt for a night out, it definitely comes down to the heels and accessories. The shoes can really transform the look. You could even wear the same t-shirt you wore for the casual look. By adding sky-high strappy heels, a bunch of layered gold jewelry, a cute little clutch, and top the look with a leather jacket, and you’re all set for a night out. If you want a more elegant look vs. a clubbing look, then you’ll want to swap out your top for something more sophisticated. For example, a top like this could totally work for a dinner party if you paired it with your midi, a pair of classic black strappy heels, and some elevated accessories.

3. Work

I personally styled my midi with a blazer for a classic black and white work look. I love the blazer because it has a fun cut-out shape in the front. The shape is also perfect because the blazer has a defined waistline and it helps to accentuate that hourglass shape.

4. How to Accessorize Your Midi Skirt

how to style a midi skirtAs I’ve mentioned above, accessorizing really depends on the occasion. For a day look, I think you can go super casual with sneakers or flat sandals. As for your bag, you can do a larger carry-all or more of a sporty look with a cross-body or fanny pack. For evening, I definitely think you should pile on the jewelry, wear a bold lip, and add a really fun bag that will draw some attention for the evening.

If you’re going to wear a jacket with your midi skirt, just make sure its either cropped length or fuller-length (at least knee-length). Jackets can look really odd with midi skirts if they hit any lower than your waist to above your knees. The layer just doesn’t look right with a midi. You need to go shorter or longer with the jacket or coat.
