This Is What Happened On My Trip To Utah + Hall Of Breakfast

By Stacey Freeman Leave a Comment

hall of breakfastThis was my first time in Utah, which I found a bit ironic given I lived in Phoenix for 7 years. Nonetheless, I was excited to visit a new state and see some new things. The week before I left for Utah, I asked my IG followers what I should do while I was there. One of my blogger friends, Sandy, suggested I visit the Hall of Breakfast. I checked out their IG page and it looked so darn cute, I added it to the top of my site-seeing list.

I reached out to them before I arrived asking if they’d let me visit, and they kindly provided me access to the museum. You guys, I’m SO glad I visited! I seriously can’t even describe to you how much fun I had. Although I was alone (work travel can be lonely), I seriously had the most fun 2 hours I’ve had in a long time. I felt like I was a kid, for the first time in a long time.

When I first arrived, the front desk attendant greeted me so friendlily and offered me a button (I chose the one with the donut, duh). He offered to take pictures for me, so I had to pose with the adorable flamingo. Then he led me into the first room, which had a giant refrigerator door to walk through – it was teal, I loved it.

The thing I loved most about the Hall of Breakfast is that each room is unique and distinct. Each individual room transports you into a breakfast wonderland. I wish I could describe to you just how special this experience was. (Note, the Hall of Breakfast is not paying me for this post. I just loved it so much I had to share it with you!).

The artistic side of me really appreciated all the art that was embedded within the experience. The sculptures were also created in such a way that you could really become part of the experience. I felt like I was a part of the art, so to speak. The space allowed for so many cool photo opportunities – I guess it really is part of the IG generation. (Is that a term or should I copyright it?).

Anyway, probably my favorite room was the one with the confetti or the eggs. I love the egg room because there were these super cool toast paintings. I also loved the confetti room because of these breakfast cereal paintings. After I posted that picture on IG, the artist – Jesse Draper – actually reached out to me. I told him how much I loved them and he asked which one I like best. I told him the honey smacks frog and he told me he is based on Flava Flav, which made me love it even more.

If you are in Utah while it’s still up, or get the chance to visit it in it’s next city (I have no doubt it will make a tour – it’s that special), you need to check it out. The Hall of Breakfast didn’t disappoint. In fact, it was the most fun I’ve had at a museum, maybe ever. This is saying a lot since I’ve visited probably 100 museums all over the world for my day job. This place was truly special.

Please don’t touch my kids’ hair. Please tell Please don’t touch my kids’ hair. Please tell your kids not to touch their hair. I can’t believe I have to say this or explain why this is racist. But I do.

I’m sure this seems like a random statement to most people. It might not seem like a big deal to you. But it’s not random and it is a big deal. It’s a common experience for Black people, and it’s not ok.

Given everything going on right now, it’s hard for me to talk about a right to our personal space and bodies. That’s part of it. But it’s also about making my kids feel like an other.

New on poshinprogress.com, I’m sharing the story of my shock and surprise when my daughter told me she didn’t feel comfortable wearing her hair down anymore because so many of her classmates were touching her hair. And then being dumbfounded to find out my son has had a similar experience. I also share information on racial micro aggressions and history of Black people’s hair. If this story is surprising or confusing to you, please read more about why it’s never ok to touch Black people’s hair.

During the summer, I live in t-shirt dresses. I try to find ones that have built in shape, like this one with a little shoelace tied waist. I also add shape and finish the look by adding jackets or light layers.

I was going to post about summer fashion. I was go I was going to post about summer fashion. I was going to talk about my kids’ beach camp next week.

But this can’t go unsaid. I am so angry right now. I am terrified for my daughter and women in the U.S.

We just lost a fundamental human right. We just lost control of our bodies.

This is not about saving the lives of unborn children. Because if it was, then all guns would be banned - because guns are the leading cause of childhood death in the U.S.

This decision is about control. About controlling women.

If you have the ability to choose whether to own a gun, why can’t I choose the healthcare decisions that are right for me? This is no longer a democracy. This decision has so much greater impact than people even realize.

If you’re looking for resources, I’m linking a comprehensive one in my stories. This is not a place for debate, this is a place to protect women and our rights to control our bodies. We must stand together.
