You Need to Know How to Wear an Off Shoulder Shirt

You Need to Know How to Wear an Off Shoulder ShirtWhile I was in London and Paris the last few weeks, I couldn’t help but notice nearly every store window I passed had a mannequin wearing an off shoulder shirt. I didn’t actually see any ladies wearing the hot trend, but then again, the weather has been pretty chilly in both cities.

I love the off shoulder shirt trend because it feels so light, airy and romantic for spring and summer. I’m also so glad that stores aren’t only carrying obvious styles – read white eyelet or lace – but also vibrant colors and interesting prints.

The only issue I have with the off shoulder shirt trend is that I personally think it is difficult for a lot of women to pull off. First, a lot of the off shoulder tops are cropped length, which can be challenging to wear unless you have a midsection you want to show off. I personally shy away from cropped tops for two reasons, first, I don’t really like to show off my belly and second, I feel a little too old to wear cropped tops.

The other thing about off shoulder tops that can make them difficult to wear is the fact that you have to go braless or wear a strapless bra. I’m not the biggest fan of strapless bras. Despite a few challenges, I’m still dying to try out the trend this summer.

I haven’t tried one on yet, but I can envision at least a couple ways to style an off shoulder shirt. I definitely think it would look cute with cut-off jean shorts and white denim. If you find a more fitted off-shoulder shirt, it would look great with flowy pants. Just make sure to balance your pieces. If you wear a flowy off shoulder shirt, pair it with more fitted pants or shorts. If you wear a fitted off-shoulder top, then add volume on the bottom with less fitted pants.

If you’re interested in trying out the off shoulder shirt trend, here are some of my current favorite pieces.
