KFC Inspired Slow Cooker Chicken Wings

My husband heard about a slow cooker chicken recipe on NPR that is supposed to rival the flavor of KFC, so we wanted to give it a try. We decided to do slow cooker chicken wings instead of a whole bird, since we had been thinking about Super Bowl recipes.

I love slow cooker recipes because they are so low maintenance and easy. My only caveat to this recipe is that it does require quite an investment in spices, but because the chicken was so tasty, I’m glad we have all of these spices on hand to make this recipe again.

After 7 hours in the slow cooker on low, the chicken was fall-off-the-bone tender, juicy and the spice blend was great. This recipe is definitely going to be a weekly stand-by for us as a healthy and low-maintenance way to make chicken.

Slow Cooker KFC-Inspired Chicken

Adapted from Stephanie O’Dea

Ingredients

  • 3 pounds of chicken
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon garlic salt
  • 1 teaspoon celery salt
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1⁄2 teaspoon ground thyme
  • 1⁄2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1⁄2 teaspoon ground sage
  • 1⁄2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1⁄4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1⁄4 teaspoon dried marjoram
  • 1⁄4 teaspoon ground cardamom

Directions

You will need a 6-quart slow cooker. Any 3 pounds of chicken will work; we chose chicken wings.

In a small bowl, combine the spices. Rub the spice blend evenly all over the chicken. Place the chicken into the slow cooker. Do not add liquid. Cover, and cook on high for 4 hours, or on low for 6 to 7 hours.

Retain the pan drippings to make rice or mashed potatoes, if desired. We made rice with the juices left in the crock pot. It was delicious with a little added salt and pepper.
