During the holidays, I made one of my favorite quick appetizers - puff pastry-wrapped brie. It is such an easy, yet appears elevated, appetizer. However, I had an extra sheet of puff pastry and I wasn't sure what to do with it. I usually used puff pastry to make. well, pastries. But I figured there must be another way to use the puff pastry. Enter puff pastry pizza. This might be my new favorite and the easiest way to make pizza at home. What is Puff Pastry? Puff pastry is a type of pastry made from dough that is repeatedly folded and rolled to create layers of butter between layers of dough. When the pastry is baked, the butter melts and creates steam, which causes the pastry to puff up and become flaky and crispy. Puff pastry is often used in pastries such as croissants and Napoleons. How to Make Puff Pastry from Scratch Puff pastry is notorious to make, which is why I definitely tend to just buy the frozen store-bought pastry. But if you want to make it at home, here is a basic recipe. Ingredients: 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp salt 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cut into small cubes 1/2 cup cold water Instructions: In a large bowl, mix together the flour and salt. Add the butter cubes to the flour mixture and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Slowly add the cold water to the mixture, stirring with a fork, until the dough comes together and forms a ball. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough into a large rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick. Fold the dough in thirds, like a letter, and rotate it 90 degrees. Roll out the dough again into a rectangle, and fold it in thirds again. Repeat this process several times, until the dough is smooth and elastic. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill it in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. Once the dough is chilled, it is ready to be used in your desired recipe. Keep in mind that puff pastry will puff up during baking, so be sure to prick it with a fork before baking to allow steam to escape. How to Prepare Frozen Puff Pastry Frozen puff pastry is a convenient option for making pastries, as it eliminates the time-consuming process of making the dough from scratch. You can find frozen puff pastry in the frozen fruit and pie area of your grocery store. To prepare frozen puff pastry, follow these steps: Take the frozen puff pastry out of the freezer and let it thaw in the refrigerator for several hours or overnight. Once the puff pastry has thawed, remove it from the packaging and place it on a lightly floured work surface. Roll out the puff pastry to the desired thickness, using a rolling pin. Cut the puff pastry into the desired shape and size, using a sharp knife or a pastry cutter. Place the cut puff pastry on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the puff pastry with an egg wash (beaten egg) or milk to give it a nice golden color. Add any desired toppings or fillings before baking. Preheat the oven to 400°F (220°C) and bake the puff pastry for 10-15 minutes or until it is golden brown and puffed. Remove the puff pastry from the oven and let it cool before serving. The baking time and temperature may vary depending on the recipe and the size of the pastry, so it's important to keep an eye on it while it's in the oven. How to Make Puff Pastry Pizza Recipes Puff pastry pizza is a variation of traditional pizza that uses puff pastry as the base instead of pizza dough. This is a great option if you have leftover puff pastry. To make puff pastry pizza, you can follow these steps: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured work surface to the desired thickness. Cut a border around the entirety of the puff pastry without cutting all the way through the pastry. This is your 'crust' of your pizza. Transfer the puff pastry to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Spread a thin layer of tomato sauce over the puff pastry, leaving the border around the edges where you scored the dough. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese over the tomato sauce. Add your desired toppings such as diced vegetables, meats, or herbs. Brush the crust edges of the puff pastry with a beaten egg to help it brown. Bake the puff pastry pizza in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed. Remove the puff pastry pizza from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving. There are so many different puff pastry pizza recipes you can try. You can also add a variety of toppings on the puff pastry pizza like pesto, cheese, or vegetables, it can be made sweet or savory, depending on your preference. Serve warm. Reheating Puff Pastry If you would like to reheat the puff pastry, this is a great way to enjoy leftovers or revive pastries that have lost their crispness. Here are a few methods for reheating puff pastry: Oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and place the puff pastry on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 5-10 minutes or until the pastry is warm and crispy. Microwave: Place the puff pastry on a microwave-safe plate and heat it on high for 15-30 seconds or until it's warm. Be careful not to overheat it, as this can cause the pastry to become soggy. Toaster: If you want to reheat small individual pastries or croissants, you can use the toaster. Place the pastries in the toaster on low to medium heat, this will bring back the crispness of the pastry. Skillet: You can also reheat puff pastry in a skillet over medium-low heat. Place the pastry in the skillet, and cook it for a few minutes on each side or until it's warm and crispy.
