You can also use specific keywords such as “hire a photographer,” “hire a photographer near me,” or “vacation photography.” This will help you find photographers in the area you are visiting. There are also a lot of online websites dedicated to vacation photography. I used Flytographer when I was in Maui and the selection of quality photographers was great. A site like this offers photographers all over the world. I did notice some locations are better staff than others. For example, I'm going to Greece this summer and they don't have too many options. There are several different sites similar to Flytographer that offer photographers in the cities you'll be visiting. I'd suggest looking at each of those sites and sifting through for the style of photographer you like. Most of these sites list their availability and their portfolios so you can find the perfect photographer for your travel destination. If you don't have luck on one of these travel photography websites, then I'd suggest looking on social media. Hiring a photographer can be tricky, but checking out their presence online and seeing their photography is a great place to start. Search Photographer Social Media Social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and Twitter can be a great resource to find photographers while traveling. Use hashtags such as #vacationphotography, #travelphotographer, or #hireaphotographer to find photographers who specialize in vacation photography. I also use hashtags such as #athensphotographer or #greecephotographer to try to find the perfect photographer for my upcoming trip to Greece. Using the Athens hashtag actually helped me find a photographer I'd love to work with. Once I found her page on Instagram, then I went directly to her website and looked at her portfolio. I sent her a direct message on Instagram and told her my dates. She wrote me back and we are in the process of finalizing dates, times and locations. I'm super pleased with using social media to find photographers while traveling. I think it's a great way to find someone through all the noise and websites because you can actually pick people based on the photos you see on the social media site. Read Reviews to Find a Photographer Before hiring a photographer, it’s always a good idea to check their reviews. You can find reviews on their website, social media platforms, or online directories such as Yelp. Reviews can give you an idea of the photographer’s quality of work and customer service. You don't want to hire a photography service unless you're sure it will be the quality that you want. I also wouldn't pay in advance. It's customary to give a deposit, but I wouldn't pay the entire thing in advance of meeting them. Check Their Portfolio A photographer’s portfolio can give you a glimpse into their style and quality of work. You can usually find their portfolio on their website or social media platforms. Look for a photographer whose style matches your preferences and who has experience photographing in the location you’re visiting. Contact the Photographer Once you’ve found a photographer you’re interested in hiring, contact them to discuss their services and availability. Ask them about their rates, the number of photos they will take, and how long the photo session will last. Also, ask about their equipment, such as the type of camera and lenses they use. Schedule the Photo Session Once you’ve found a photographer you’re happy with, schedule the photo session. Make sure you discuss the location, time, and any other details with the photographer beforehand. Also, make sure to arrive on time and be ready to pose for the photos.
