Discover Bimini Bahamas: The Hidden Gem of the Caribbean

Virgin Voyages sponsored my cruise and stop in Bimini Bahamas. All opinions are my own.

When people think of the Bahamas, places like Nassau and Paradise Island often steal the spotlight. But just 50 miles off the coast of Florida lies a lesser-known tropical paradise that’s brimming with charm, adventure, and relaxation—Bimini. This stunning slice of heaven offers crystal-clear turquoise waters, pristine beaches, a rich cultural history, and some of the best resorts in the region. Whether you’re planning a relaxing getaway or looking for a convenient stop on a cruise, Bimini Bahamas is a dream destination waiting to be explored.

Where is Bimini Bahamas?

It is the westernmost district of the Bahamas, consisting of two main islands—North Bimini and South Bimini—and several smaller cays. It’s the closest Bahamian island to the U.S., making it incredibly accessible, especially for those traveling from Miami or Fort Lauderdale. The short travel time makes Bimini ideal for quick escapes, long weekends, and romantic getaways.

Bimini Beaches: Turquoise Tranquility

If your dream vacation includes lounging on powdery white sand with crystal-blue waters as your backdrop, you’ll fall in love with the beaches. The island is surrounded by stunning shoreline, and the warm, calm waters are perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and paddleboarding.

Top Beaches:

  • Radio Beach: Located on North Bimini, this is the most popular and easily accessible beach. It’s ideal for relaxing, sunbathing, and catching epic sunsets.

  • Tiki Hut Beach: A quieter alternative with calm waters and soft sand.

  • Spook Hill Beach: A hidden gem perfect for a peaceful day of swimming or beachcombing.

Whether you’re chasing waves or simply soaking up the sun, every beach has its own special allure.

My Visit with Virgin Voyages

I had the chance to visit as part of my Virgin Voyages cruise—and let me tell you, it was one of the highlights of the entire trip. Unlike many cruise ports that feel overly commercial or crowded, Virgin Voyages offers a more exclusive experience with access to their private Beach Club at Bimini.

As soon as we docked, we were greeted with turquoise waters, swaying palm trees, and a laid-back luxury vibe that set the tone for a perfect beach day. This beach club feels like a boutique resort, with multiple pools, private cabanas, food and drink service, and direct access to one of the most beautiful stretches of beach. There’s also a lively DJ spinning tunes by the pool, optional wellness activities like beach yoga in the morning, and plenty of places to just relax with a cocktail in hand.

What I loved most about this stop was how easy and stress-free everything felt. You step right off the ship and into paradise. No long transfers or complicated logistics—just pure enjoyment. For anyone considering a cruise with Virgin Voyages, this stop is reason enough to book. And if you’re looking for ideas for what to pack for a cruise, click here.

Things to Do in Bimini

Bimini might be small, but it’s packed with activities for every kind of traveler. Here are a few highlights:

Snorkeling and Diving

Bimini Bay and the surrounding waters are home to some of the best snorkeling and diving in the Bahamas. Don’t miss:

  • The Bimini Road (a.k.a. the Road to Atlantis): A mysterious underwater rock formation that some believe to be the remnants of Atlantis.

  • SS Sapona Shipwreck: A half-submerged concrete shipwreck ideal for snorkeling and freediving.

Big Game Fishing

Ernest Hemingway put Bimini on the map as a fishing destination in the 1930s. Today, sportfishing remains one of the island’s biggest draws, with opportunities to catch marlin, tuna, snapper, and more.

Water Adventures

Rent a jet ski, hop on a paddleboard, or take a boat tour around Bahamas Bimini Island. You can even swim with wild dolphins or explore hidden coves via kayak.

Island Tours & History

Take a golf cart tour around the island to explore Alice Town, local shops, and historical sites. Learn about the island’s pirate past, Prohibition-era smuggling tales, and even its ties to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who wrote part of his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech while visiting.

Bimini Bahamas Cruise Port: A Perfect Day Stop

If you’re visiting via cruise, the Bimini Bahamas Cruise Port is a fantastic introduction to the island. Located near Resorts World Bimini, the port provides easy access to beaches, shopping, restaurants, and excursions. Many cruise passengers opt to spend their day soaking up the sun on a beach, taking a snorkeling tour, or enjoying a tropical cocktail at a beachfront bar.

Cruise visitors love it for its laid-back vibe, warm hospitality, and unspoiled natural beauty.

Food and Dining Options

From fresh seafood to island classics, the island offers an array of delicious dining options. Don’t leave without trying:

  • Cracked conch: A Bahamian favorite.

  • Lobster salad: Best enjoyed at a beachside shack.

  • Conch fritters: A must-try appetizer, especially with a cold Kalik beer.

Popular local spots include Stuart’s Conch Stand, Joe’s Conch Shack, and Big John’s Bar & Grill. Many of the hotels feature on-site dining options with beautiful ocean views.

Best Time to Visit Bimini

The best time to visit Bimini is from December to April when the weather is dry, sunny, and comfortably warm. However, Bimini is a year-round destination thanks to its tropical climate. Summer (June–August) is great for beach lovers but keep in mind that it’s also hurricane season.

What’s the Weather like?

One of the perks of traveling to the Bahamas its consistently warm weather year-round. Here’s a general breakdown:

  • Winter (Dec–Feb): Mild and breezy, with highs in the mid-70s°F (24°C). Ideal for avoiding hurricane season.

  • Spring (Mar–May): Temperatures rise to the low 80s°F (28°C), with minimal rainfall. A great time to visit.

  • Summer (Jun–Aug): Hot and humid, reaching up to 90°F (32°C). Expect occasional tropical showers.

  • Fall (Sep–Nov): Still warm, but this is the peak of hurricane season—travel insurance is a must.

Humidity is common year-round, so pack light and breathable clothing.
