Valentine’s day is only a month away so I’m starting to think of little ways to add touches of love throughout this month. These pretzel Valentine hearts are so cute and really easy to make. But before we get into the instructions on how to make these cute pretzel Valentine treats, let’s talk a bit about pretzels and Valentine’s day.

History of the Pretzel

Pretzels have a long and interesting history. They originated in Europe as early as the 7th or 8th century in Germany or Austria. The word “pretzel” is derived from the Latin word “pretiolum,” which means “little reward.” History says Monks invented pretzels as a reward for children who learned their prayers. The twisted shape of the pretzel is said to represent arms crossed in prayer. Pretzels were originally made from bread dough that was boiled in water and baking soda before being baked. This gave the pretzels their distinctive flavor and chewy texture. Pretzels were traditionally served as a snack at fairs and festivals and were also given to children as a treat.  I was not able to find information on the specific date that mini pretzels were introduced. However, it is likely that mini pretzels have been around for a long time for easy transport and snacking.

History of Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is a holiday that is celebrated on February 14th. It is named after Saint Valentine, a Christian martyr who lived in the 3rd century. There are many stories and legends about Saint Valentine, but the most popular one is that he was a priest who secretly married couples in love during a time when marriage was forbidden by the Roman Empire.

The holiday of Valentine’s Day is thought to have originated in the 14th and 15th centuries in England and France. During this time, Valentine’s Day was associated with courtly love and romantic poems. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Valentine’s Day became more commercialized. This is when the exchange of cards, flowers, and gifts becomes more common.

Today, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world. It is a day for expressing love and affection, typically through the exchange of cards, flowers, and gifts. The holiday is also associated with the colors red and pink, which are symbols of love and romance.

Why is Valentine’s Day Red and Pink?

When you think of Valentine’s Day, I bet you think of red and pink as the colors. The origin of the association between Valentine’s Day and the colors red and pink is not clear. Some historians believe the colors are related to red roses and pink flowers, since many people give flowers as gifts on the holiday. Others suggest that the colors may have been chosen because they are traditionally associated with love and romance in many cultures around the world. Regardless of the origin, red and pink have become deeply engrained in the culture and symbolism of Valentine’s Day. You can’t go to Valentine’s section without seeing red and pink everywhere.

What are Sprinkles Made of?

We use sprinkles to decorate cakes, cookies, and other baked goods. They are small pieces of confectionary,  typically made from sugar, cornstarch, and other ingredients that give them their characteristic texture and flavor. Sprinkles ingredients vary by manufacturer. But generally, sprinkles include sugar, cornstarch, vegetable oil, confectioner’s glaze, and artificial colors and flavors. Sprinkles may also contain other additives and preservatives to extend their shelf life and improve their texture and appearance. As you can see from this pretzel Valentine recipe, some sprinkles are much larger, like these cute heart sprinkles I found.

What are White Chocolate Candy Melts?

Many bakers use white chocolate candy melts to coat or dip sweets or baked goods. To use white chocolate candy melts, you can melt them in a microwave-safe bowl or over a double boiler on the stove. Once melted, you can use them to coat or dip your desired treats and let them set until firm. You can also add food coloring or other flavorings to the melted white chocolate to customize the chocolate coating.

Manufacturers create candy melts using a combination of cocoa butter, milk solids, and sugar, along with other ingredients such as emulsifiers and flavorings. They are formulated to be easy to melt and to hold their shape when cooled, making them a convenient option for dipping and coating sweets and baked goods. There are several different types of candy melts available, including white chocolate, milk chocolate, and dark chocolate, as well as a variety of colors and flavors. Bakers use candy melts in cake decorating and other culinary applications as an alternative to traditional chocolate, as they are easier to work with and have a smoother, creamier consistency.
