An Easy Amaretto Sour Cocktail Recipe for National Amaretto Day
Have you ever had an amaretto sour? I hadn’t, but I knew I wanted to try one in honor of National Amaretto Day. Amaretto is an Italian liquor that’s typically flavored with almonds or apricot stones. Its distinctive flavor can be incorporated into numerous cocktails, but it’s best known for the Amaretto Sour. Some people don’t like this drink because it can be too sweet. After researching several recipes, it seems like the ones that included bourbon had the best reviews, so that’s what I chose to do. If you’re looking to try a new drink or having had one before, you need to try this amaretto sour cocktail recipe.
I know that it might seem odd to use egg whites in a drink, but it’s actually really common. It creates richness and a frothiness that pairs really well with the sweet and sour flavors. I’m pretty much addicted to lemon flavors and I love things super tart, so I tend to be light-handed with the simple syrup. If you prefer a sweeter drink, you can obviously add more or add extra cherries.
I’ve seen the drink garnished with both lemon rinds and sliced oranges – always also paired with cherries. You can choose whichever garnish you prefer. I actually love the look of both citrus options, but opted for oranges for more of a summery vibe.
The recipe below uses egg whites and bourbon. I chose to include them because the most poular recipes chose those ingredients. If the thought of drinking egg whites grosses you out, you can leave them out. Honestly, you can’t taste it! It just adds a nice frothy viscosity. If you don’t like bourbon, you can also leave that out. I saw recipes that didn’t use it and some that did.

Amaretto Sour Cocktail Recipe
Ingredients:
Ice Cubes
1½ Ounces Amaretto
¾ Ounce Bourbon
1 Ounce Lemon Juice
1 tsp Simple Syrup
1/2 Ounce Egg White
1 Whole Cherry
1 Slice Orange
Lemon Rind
Directions:
Fill a shaker with ice cubes. Add all ingredients. Shake and strain into a rocks glass. Garnish with a maraschino cherry and an orange slice.
