The summer to fall transition in California is different than a lot of places. It is still relatively warm during the day, but the evenings cool off a lot. That’s why layering is so important. Since it’s starting to feel like fall in a lot of places, I thought I’d share my 5 fall wardrobe essentials to take you from summer to fall with ease. I’ve been thinking about a fall capsule wardrobe, so these are a few of the pieces I plan to include.
1. Moto Jacket
A wardrobe staple for me is a moto jacket. I honestly own about 10 of them – no lie. They are such a great wardrobe staple because they look great with dresses, skirts, shorts or jeans. They are so versatile and really do go with everything. I especially love moto jackets because they are edgy while still feeling feminine. I usually try to find fits that are either cropped or closer to the body so they don’t feel bulky. This jacket is ultra light-weight and a great transition piece for fall. A moto jacket should definitely be part of your fall wardrobe essentials. It doesn’t matter what color – although I’d opt for a lighter color for a great summer to fall transition. Pastels and neutrals are really in, so that might be a great place to start if you don’t already own one.
2. Slingback Heels
Slingback heels are one of my favorite transition shoes from summer to fall because they still feel like a sandal with the open heel, but work great for day to night. My heels are suede, which also gives off such a nice fall vibe. Ironically, I’ve actually had these slingbacks for more than a decade. They are timeless in both the shape and the material. Shoes are one area I always suggest investing more money because they really can last for a very long time.

3. Shirt Dress
Shirt dresses are always on trend and they are a great summer to fall transition piece. If you’re looking for fall wardrobe essentials, you can’t go wrong with a shirt dress. Mine has a really interesting tie at the waist to create more of an hourglass shape. If you open for a sheath style, then I’d suggest you add a belt or try to create a waistline with a cropped jacket. I chose an army green color because it feels very fall but it also works really great year-round. Since it is a t-shirt it works for warmer days, but can also be dressed up with a jacket.
4. Chunky Gold Jewelry
Gold is majorly in for fall. Have you noticed all the choker necklaces and layered gold necklaces? I personally love gold jewelry and the chunkier the better. I chose to wear a large pendant necklace, but any gold necklaces will work. The more the better this fall, as layering gold jewelry is a huge trend.
5. Versatile Handbag
The other area of my closet that I invest a lot of money is in my handbags. I do purchase designer handbags because they last for decades, the quality is impeccable, and if you choose the right style, they are timeless. This Chloe bag fits the bill for me because it is versatile in chocolate brown, it has fun gold accents, but the shape isn’t too wild and the details aren’t too much that it will be out of style too soon.
I hope my fall wardrobe essentials are a good start for you to create your fall capsule wardrobe. What are your fashion essentials for fall?
