To be honest, most of my home decor has been acquired out of necessity, not with as much thought as I would like. A lot of it is disposable — stuff I bought in my early-mid twenties to fill space.
The majority of the pieces I love the most were gifts. One of my students gave me this giant multi-colored vase (I used to teach undergrads). Although a very thoughtful gesture, at the time, I thought it was a totally random gift. I didn’t really think I’d have a spot for it. Over 9 years later, it’s one of my favorite home accents.
In my 30’s, I’ve realized that all home decor should speak to me as much as that gifted vase. If I do need to add new style home accents, I try to find things that are really special, unique or inspiring to me.
