I never really imagined creating my own skincare products, but after seeing DIY body scrub after DIY soap on Pinterest, I thought it was about time I try it for myself.
With a little bit of research, I decided on a DIY lemon ginger sugar body scrub. After all the hormonal fluctuations with my pregnancy that led to acne and melasma, I need something soothing and healing. I based this scrub recipe on few different recipes I found here, here and here.
Why these ingredients?
Lemons heal acne and blemishes, lighten dark spots, and heal dry skin. Ginger has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, perfect for acne-prone skin. It also contains the antioxidant gingerol, which fights skin-damaging free radicals and can help promote a brighter, firmer, more youthful appearance. Extra virgin olive oil moisturizes and conditions the skin since it is packed with antioxidants and vitamin E. Pure cane sugar is a gentle exfoliator perfect for removing dead skin.
Read on for the recipe below.
DIY Lemon Ginger Body Scrub
1 ¼ cups pure cane sugar
¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
zest of one lemon
¼ cup lemon juice
2 tablespoons fresh ginger, finely grated (skin removed)
Mix all ingredients together. For a grainier texture, add more sugar. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
I used the scrub about a week after I made it and I was really happy with it. It smells really great, the texture is very good for exfoliating and the olive oil adds so much moisture. After I got out of the shower, my skin felt really smooth and soft.
